Изучение экономической системы с точки зрения ее распределения в пространстве, точнее на поверхности земли как таковой, безотносительно к административному делению. Задача исследований состоит, по словам нидерландского ученого Х.Боса, в поиске «оптимального размещения производства в центрах различных размеров и разной отраслевой структуры»[1]. Соответственно, эти исследования основываются на экономико-математических моделях размещения центров сосредоточения населения, моделях межрайонных экономических связей, моделях оптимального размещения производства и др. Например, модели размещения населенных пунктов учитывают их экономическое значение, сферы сбыта продукции, отраслевую структуру и т.д. В качестве параметров принимаются сведения о размещении запасов полезных ископаемых, рынков сбыта, обеспеченности водой. Проблемы пространственного характера подразделяют на аналитические, плановые и политико-экономические. Аналитические сводятся к объяснениям сложившейся ситуации и пространственной характеристики производственных процессов, плановые — к решению задач, связанных с улучшением размещения хозяйства; политико-экономические — к определению критериев того, что считать в этой области лучшим, т.е. целей экономической политики. Некоторые авторы трактуют предмет пространственного анализа несколько иначе, полагая, что в нем объединяются два метода: локационный анализ (под которым понимается примерно то, что здесь определяется как пространственный), и региональный анализ.
